Dear Reader!
The Fertő Region has been a meeting point of peoples, languages and cultures for thousands of years. Sarród is part of this beautiful landscape. The exact date of its foundation is still a secret of the past, but according to written documents the village has existed for more than 700 years.
For me, Sarród is not just a village, it is my homeland and has been home to my family for generations. The love of Sarród has been a dominant part of my life since childhood. Its history is also an eloquent testimony to the great things that can be achieved by working together.
The book takes us on a journey through the archaeology, physical geography, demography and history of Sarród, and it deals with nature protection, church history, tourism, education, cultural history, architecture and agriculture. It is not only a summary of the development of this municipality, but also demonstrates the birth and development of Nyárliget and Fertőújlak. It presents the civil organisations, honorary citizens and twin town relations of the municipality.
Life has its surprises, in 2013, a representative of the local government of Sarród for the second term, and PhD student at the Doctoral School of Earth Sciences of the University of Pécs, I started editing the book and inviting co-authors. The Sarród 700 was completed, all copies of which sold out in a few years, and there was a strong demand for a new, enlarged edition. And now, in 2025, 12 years later, with the same Sarród heart, but now as a Member of Parliament representing Sopron and its region, I can work every day as chairman of the tourism subcommittee, for the development of my beloved village, for tourism, for the people who live here and, of course, for the preservation of the cultural heritage of the village, for which I am very grateful. Another milestone is the publication of Sarród 700+, with new chapters, biographies and events of the last 11 years. It is with great respect and fond memories that we think back to the “good old fellows” who helped to collect the old Sarród photographs 25 years ago, and who were authors in the original book but who sadly are no longer with us. We can neither slow down nor stop the wheel of time, we can only decide what to do with the time we have been given. I believe that with this work we are creating something that will last, bringing joy and giving guidance to our children, grandchildren and those who will live here later. Consider the admonition of Széchenyi, the greatest Hungarian, son of our region, that
„You should respect the past in order to understand the
present and work for the future.”
